Giftedness Workshop
Workshop
13.30 - 15.00 h
Where? EDLAB - Garden Room, Tapijnkazerne 23
Workshop by Anke Smeenk
Many gifted people don't feel gifted. Do you often have thoughts such as:
'Yes, I can do this, but everyone can do this, right?' or ‘There are many students who get higher grades while studying less than I do’ or ‘If I were gifted, I would not be struggling so much with my studies and friendships’ or 'If I really were gifted, I would be able to do this or that (better)'.
Because many gifted people don't feel that way, we will focus on this theme during the workshop.
Firstly, we will dive a little deeper in the question what giftedness is, because the word ‘giftedness’ often has a negative connotation in society due to some perseverant stereotypical views. One of these stereotypes that all gifted people are very successful and perform excellently without any help. In contrary to this point of view, giftedness in everyday life is often not just about having good cognitive abilities or having an IQ above 130, but it involves a range of characteristics, including sensitivity, doubt, and setting (too) high expectations. These characteristics add an extra layer of complexity to seemingly ‘normal’ problems and may therefore lead to lower self-confidence, procrastination, and failed results, thus negatively affecting personal well-being.
Secondly, we will address potential pitfalls of not recognizing or acknowledging giftedness. Our goal is to show an alternative framework for thinking about giftedness on the one hand and to provide insight into the pitfalls of not recognizing your own ‘gift’ on the other hand.

Neurodivergent students at UM, specifically those with AD(H)D and autism, seek a supportive community that understands their experiences and needs. Many staff members believe that they lack understanding of neurodiversity and how to provide adequate support within the framework of their roles.
Our session aims to raise awareness by addressing questions such as:
- What comes to mind thinking of autism and AD(H)D? What stereotypes and myths surround these conditions?
- What are the typical symptoms?
- What are lived experiences of UM students?
- How can embracing the Neurodiversity paradigm enhance interactions with neurodivergent students?
Join us in Embracing Neurodiversity at UM!

Concentration: Staying Focused in Times of Distraction
Lecture by Studium Generale
20.00 - 21.00h
Where? Minderbroedersberg Maastricht
Lecture by Prof. Stefan van der Stigchel, Professor of cognitive psychology and attention expert, Utrecht University
We are in the midst of an attention crisis - caused largely by our smartphones. There is a constant stream of information that we are powerless to withstand because it shows up in our notifications. More and more of us are finding it increasingly hard to concentrate.
Van der Stigchel explains how concentration works and offers advice on how to stay focused in a world of beeping smartphones, channel surfing, live-tweeting, pop-up ads and other distractions. The good news, he reports, is that we now know more about brain and behaviour than ever before, and he can draw on the latest scientific findings in his account of concentration. He explains, among other things, that the battle for our attention began long before the digital era; why our phones are so addictive; the importance of working memory (responsible for executing complicated tasks) and how to increase its capacity; and why multitasking is bad for our concentration, but attention rituals help it. He explains the positive effects of taking “tech breaks” (particularly in natural surroundings), meditation, and even daydreaming. We can win the battle for our attention, Van der Stigchel argues, if we have the knowledge and the tools to do it.
