Benelux Metabolomics Days 2025
The 2025 BMD edition took place on 27 and 28 August at Leiden University, under the leadership of Prof. Thomas Hankemeier of the Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research and Scientific Director of the BMC foundation. The conference was held under the theme:
“Translation to impact: from breakthroughs in fundamental science to applications of metabolomics.”
With 125 participants, seven impactful sessions, 28 presentations (including 11 keynote lectures and 17 presentations by early-career researchers selected through abstract submission), and four short sponsor presentations, the event also offered ample opportunity for poster sessions and networking.
During these two conference days, we enjoyed lively discussions between participants. We conclude that the Benelux Metabolomics Days has succeeded again in bringing together the Metabolomics community of the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg to discuss recent metabolomics research with young, talented early career researchers and senior scientists.
Thanks to all presenters, chairs, the audience and the local Leiden and BMC team for creating an inspiring atmosphere. You all did a wonderful job again presenting and being very engaged during the discussions, poster presentations and the networking dinner.
The Benelux Metabolomics Days are made possible thanks to the commitment of our loyal gold sponsors. We are very grateful for your support – thank you!
See you all in Antwerp in 2026!
Best Poster Award 2025
During the conference, the Best Poster Award 2025 was presented, including a €500 travel grant to support attendance at a conference of the recipient’s choice.
The BEST POSTER 2025 during the Benelux Metabolomics Days was awarded to Victoria Pozo Garcia (VU Amsterdam) for her research entitled: “Glycine: the missing link between carbohydrate and xenobiotic metabolism in the maturation of iPSC-derived hepatocytes.” She was selected unanimously by the poster committee and received the travel grant check via the BMC office.
The winner of the Best Poster Award 2024, Begoña Talavera Andújar, used her prize money / the travel grant from 2024 to support participation and accommodation at BMD 2025.
Young BMC Symposium prior to the Benelux Metabolomics Days
On 26 August the YoungBMC Symposium 2025 was hosted by dr Sofia Moco at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam). The annual symposium is organised by the Young BMC.
A group of early career researchers (ECRs) within the Benelux came together for a full day of metabolomics presentations, posters, lab-tour, discussions and fun! Prof. dr. Bas Teusink (VU) delivered an inspiring talk that offered plenty of ‘food for thought’ on how multi-omics data can be integrated and how metabolomics results can be interpreted from a systems biology perspective. ECRs Shauni Loopmans, Pablo Vangeenderhuysen, Victoria Pozo Garcia, Tobias Ackermann, Pranas Grigaitis, Manuel Alfaro Gomez, Fien Verdoodt, and Ralph Monte gave excellent short presentations and received valuable feedback on their work from the audience.
Have a look a the programme book for more information.
Next to the support from BMC we appreciate the efforts and generosity in supporting our event by our sponsors.
We look forward to seeing you in Antwerp, Belgium on September 21 for the next edition of the Young BMC Symposium!
