13:30 - 15:00 |Giftedness: Shining a light on bright students
by Anke Smeenk (FHML student advisor)| UCM- Zwingelput 4, room A1.002
Many gifted people don't feel gifted. Do you often have thoughts such as:
- 'Yes, I can do this, but everyone can do this, right?' or
- ‘There are many students who get higher grades while studying less than I do’ or
- ‘If I were gifted, I would not be struggling so much with my studies and friendships’ or
- 'If I really were gifted, I would be able to do this or that (better)'.
Because many gifted people don't feel that way, we will focus on this theme during the workshop.
Firstly, we will dive a little deeper in the question what giftedness is, because the word ‘giftedness’ often has a negative connotation in society due to some perseverant stereotypical views. One of these stereotypes that all gifted people are very successful and perform excellently without any help. In contrary to this point of view, giftedness in everyday life is often not just about having good cognitive abilities or having an IQ above 130, but it involves a range of characteristics, including sensitivity, doubt, and setting (too) high expectations. These characteristics add an extra layer of complexity to seemingly ‘normal’ problems and may therefore lead to lower self-confidence, procrastination, and failed results, thus negatively affecting personal well-being.
Secondly, we will address potential pitfalls of not recognizing or acknowledging giftedness .
This workshop (in English) is offered both to students and UM-employees who would like to learn more about the topic and who are open to look beyond common prejudices together with us.
Our goal is to show an alternative framework for thinking about giftedness on the one hand and to provide insight into the pitfalls of not recognizing your own ‘gift’ on the other hand.

19:00 - 20:30 | Lecture: Giftedness (for everyone who’s interested)
by Anke Smeenk ( FHML study adviser), Maartje Cox (Alumni UM) & Léa Vandewynckel (Student UCM)| Online
Because of rising interest in the topic ‘giftedness’ after last year’s presentation, the online lecture ‘shining a light on bright students’ is offered again during this year’s well-being week.
Giftedness is not merely about being an ‘Einstein’ and having an IQ score >130. Among students as well as among teachers confusion exists about giftedness. There is no clear definition, while there are many assumptions about giftedness, like the idea that a student should only achieve high grades and never get stuck at university.
In fact, giftedness is not only mental acuity or cognitive ability, but it is a set of characteristics, including sensitivity, doubt and setting (too) ambitious expectations. These characteristics can add an extra layer of complexity to seemingly 'normal' problems and may lead to lower self-confidence, procrastination, and failed results, thus negatively affecting personal well-being.
Understanding the various aspects of giftedness will support gifted students to develop and use their talents and to show them that it really is a gift!
Everyone (students, PhD's, tutors, mentors, etc.) is welcome to join this interactive online lecture in English during which we will explore the prejudices and pitfalls of giftedness together.
By participating in this interactive lecture, you will:
- Develop an alternative framework regarding stereotypical thinking about giftedness.
- Gain insight into the different struggles and associated underlying processes that gifted people may encounter.
20:30 - 21:45 | Yin Yoga: The art of doing less = feeling more and feeling more alive
by Ilona Wijnands| Body & Mind Studio, University Sports Centre P. Debyeplein 15
Most of us are used to doing a lot of “things” to feel alive. In primary and elementary school we don’t get educated about slowing down or taking naps. But what if you can feel MORE alive by doing LESS? This is the field of Being in Doing. Due to the integration of yoga, meditation and silence, into our daily day life, we can make this change. The more we slow down, the more we reconnect with our true nature, emotions and feelings.
Yin yoga is a gift for those who are looking for a more in-depth practise of reconnecting to their true nature. For those who are longing for more rest and ritualising stillness into the daily busy yang life style. During the workshop you will be showered with yin yoga and loads of deep breaths.
Introduction of Ilona
Hi, my name is Ilona Wijnands. In my daily life I am a passionate yoga teacher. I love to make people aware of how they take care of themselves, their time, energy and boundaries. I love to share and listen to real life stories from all kind of people. Teaching people how to properly rest and listen to their body is my specialism. No degrees needed, just step into a pure yin yoga class.
My life has always been hectic and busy and filled up with “things”. For the most time I was in doing modus, to avoid feeling all my feelings. I studied communication and was busy building my career. Doing loads of tasks and taking care of others and projects made me feel like I was somebody. But it left me unseen and empty inside at the end of the day. The moment yin yoga came into my life, everything changed.
