You’ve probably already seen it: a checkout page that doesn’t just show the familiar iDEAL logo, but also the new Wero logo. In the Netherlands, and in other European countries, a transition is currently underway: iDEAL is being gradually replaced by the new payment method Wero.
If you organize events and rely on online ticket sales, this is something you shouldn’t ignore. Payment methods determine how visitors complete their purchase, how transactions are processed, and what you as an organizer need to take into account for your administration.
So what exactly is Wero, when will iDEAL stop, and what should you as an organizer prepare for? We’ll walk you through it step by step.
What is WERO?
Wero is a new European payment method developed as part of the European Payments Initiative. The goal is to provide one unified payment solution across Europe, allowing consumers to pay directly through their own bank. It works in a similar way to iDEAL in the Netherlands, but with a broader European focus.
With this initiative, banks aim to become less dependent on international providers such as Visa and Mastercard and gain more control over their own payment infrastructure.
When will the transition happen?
The transition will take place in phases and will vary by country. At a high level, the timeline looks like this:
-
Early 2026: The familiar iDEAL logo will appear on checkout pages alongside the new iDEAL | Wero logo. Your attendees will see this change, but the payment experience itself will remain the same.
-
Throughout 2026: iDEAL transactions will gradually be migrated to the Wero platform. This process happens behind the scenes. Attendees will continue to pay as they always have, while the technical infrastructure is updated in the background.
-
2027: The temporary iDEAL and Wero payment solution will fully transition to Wero, which will then become the standard payment method.
What does this mean for events?
Ticket sales: Online payments through a customer’s own bank will remain possible. The payment flow may look slightly different, for example due to a new interface or a different order in which banks are displayed, but for visitors the principle remains the same: secure and direct payment through their bank.
International events: Wero will become a European payment method. This can make the payment experience easier for international attendees, since they will be able to use the same payment method for cross border ticket purchases as they use in their own country.
Back office and administration: Payment processing is expected to remain similar to iDEAL. Event software and payment service providers, such as aanmelder.nl in collaboration with Delft Congress Support, handle the technical integration. Over time, additional European features may be introduced.

For event organizers, the transition mainly means that chargebacks or disputes may become possible through Wero, which could result in additional administrative work. There may also be higher variable costs, since Wero uses a percentage based transaction fee rather than the fixed fee structure used by iDEAL.
Are you curious about the transaction fees charged by aanmelder.nl? You can find them here.
Do you need to take action right now?
No. For now, it is simply important to be aware that the transition is coming and to understand what it may involve, such as the possibility of bank initiated reversals.
Are you working with aanmelder.nl? Then you do not need to make any technical changes yourself. The integration with payment providers will be automatically updated once Wero is fully rolled out.
