BWI Global Sports Conference

29-30 March 2022

Doha, Qatar

Geneva, 21 February 2022

Dear colleagues and friends,

We are pleased to invite you to participate in the BWI 2022 Global Sports Conference which will take place from 29 to 30 March 2022, at the Crowne Plaza Doha, the Business Park, in Doha, State of Qatar.

Please register for the meeting by Monday, 9 March 2022.

The conference will focus on the FIFA World Cup in 2022 and the decade-long campaign of BWI for decent work in the State of Qatar. Given the expected restrictions due to the global pandemic, this shall be a hybrid event. It shall also be convened by BWI in cooperation with our institutional partners in Qatar – the Ministry of Labour and the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC) and our various solidarity support partners and allies, such as FIFPRO.

Objective of the conference will be to assess achievements and remaining challenges for decent work in Qatar, as well as to discuss concrete actions to ensure that the World Cup legacy lives in the freedom and conditions of migrant workers in Qatar long after the Games are over.

The conference will also be an occasion to recognize the efforts of thousands of migrant workers engaging in construction work to build the World Cup infrastructure through a friendly football tournament “Migrant Workers’ Cup” to be played by young trade union members from BWI affiliates, FIFPRO football players, and migrant workers.

Interpretation will be provided in English, French and Arabic. The BWI will look into possibilities to provide additional languages if needed. The costs of meals and coffee breaks will be borne by the organizer.

The draft program of the conference is attached to this invitation letter.
